The Malaysian Government launched the Electronic Government initiative to reinvent itself to lead the country into the Information Age. E-Government seeks to enhance the convenience, accessibility and quality of interactions with the public and businesses at large; simultaneously, it will improve information flows and processes within government to improve the speed and quality of policy development, coordination and enforcement. Citizens and businesses are also able to transact with the government anywhere and anytime at their convenience.
The my Government Portal (www.gov.my) acts as the one-stop source of Malaysian government information and services for the citizens.
The e-government implementation in Malaysia:
1. Language barrier
- Some of the government websites still using Bahasa Malaysia although some of it has change to English.
- Lack of technical infrastructure.
- Malaysians remain skeptical on being distrust on electronic transaction especially on online banking buying from an Internet store.
- Public are not aware of the services offered.
Strategies for citizen to adopt e-government:
- Provide websites with multiple language versions.
- Increase awareness through TV and radio advertisements, and organizing workshops at shopping malls.
- Provide consultation services on how to use those services.
- Simplify procedures needed to access to the e-government services.
The adoption of e-government brings more convenient to Malaysian and people no longer need to walk to the office to pay their tax form and etc. They can pay it through the internet. Nowadays, this implementation still not popular among Malaysian but in the future this will be a great benefit for them.
